Redshirt-junior
John Carroll cleaned up a missed shot under the basket and converted it into a three-point play with 22 ticks left on the clock to propel the University of Hartford men's basketball team past local foe Quinnipiac, 77-75, at the Reich Family Pavilion on Thursday.
Carroll was one of three Hawks to finish in double figures on the night, scoring 14 points. Junior
Jason Dunne added 20 points for the Hawks, while junior transfer
Travis Weatherington led Hartford with a career-high 22 points. Cameron Young led all scorers with 27 points, adding 10 rebounds in the losing effort for Quinnipiac.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A back-and-forth first half led to Quinnipiac spoiling a 10-point Hartford advantage and taking a lead into the locker rooms at halftime. In the final seconds of the half, junior J.R. Lynch cut a four-point deficit in half to make it 38-36 at intermission.
- The Bobcats took control in the opening part of the second half, jumping out to a nine-point lead – their largest of the game – with 12 minutes to go in the stanza.
- But Hartford responded with a 12-0 run fueled by four three-point possessions – a trio of threes and a George Blagojevic three-point play – to claw back into the game. Weatherington capped off that run with his fourth three-pointer of the night to give the Hawks their first advantage (57-54) of the second half with 9:20 remaining.
- The lead continued to change hands, and with two minutes left, Quinnipiac held the advantage at 74-71. With 25 seconds to go, Dunne cut the deficit to one on a drive before Hartford forced a five-second violation to get the ball back.
- Dunne came up short with the go-ahead basket on the ensuing play, but Carroll nabbed the offensive rebound and turned it into a three-point play with 22 seconds left to give Hartford the 76-74 lead.
- With nine seconds left, Jacob Rigoni drew a foul for the Bobcats, but was unable to tie up the game with a 1-of-2 effort at the line. Carroll, who was sent to the line with seven seconds to go, made the first but missed the second to make it a 77-75 Hawks' lead. With time running off the clock, the Bobcats had one final chance, but Isaiah Washington's three at the buzzer hit the rim.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Hawks shot 47.6 percent from the floor, going 30-of-63, including 37.5 percent from three (9-of-24).
- Weatherington, who had 11 points in the first half behind a 3-of-4 effort from behind the arc, finished the game with a career-high 22 points. He knocked down five three-pointers, also a career best mark.
- Carroll added a game-best five assists and two blocks to his 14 points.
