Men's Soccer Plays Binghamton to Scoreless Tie

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 0, Binghamton 0 (2ot)
RECORDS: Hartford 4-5-4, 0-2-2 AE; Binghamton 7-5-2, 2-1-0 AE
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD: The University of Hartford men's soccer team settled for a double overtime, scoreless draw against Binghamton on Saturday evening at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks had the better of play and produced ample scoring opportunities, but they were unable to capitalize on a 20-4 shot advantage. Holding Binghamton to just one shot on goal, Hartford's defense collected its third shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         Hartford put on the pressure for the majority of the match. Holding the Bearcats to just four total shots, the Hawks held a 6-3 advantage in shots at halftime and went on to post 10 more attempts than their counterparts in the second half.

·         Producing several scoring opportunities in the first half, the Hawks saw their best scoring chance of that stretch come early in the ninth minute. Junior Jeff Tryon got a left foot under a volley inside of the six, and hit the crossbar with his shot. The deflection fell straight down, but in front of the goal line to keep the match scoreless.

·         The Hawks' attack posted two more first-half threats in the 17th and 40th minutes. Receiving a ball from freshman Mikkel Song, senior Javoni Simms saw his shot from point-blank go just wide before sophomore Andre Morrison forced Binghamton keeper Robert Moewes to come up with a save on his shot out of a free kick before the end of the half. It was the second stop of the night for the Bearcats' keeper.

·         Out of the intermission, the remainder of the match was all Hartford as it combined to outshoot Binghamton, 14-1. The Hawks again had several scoring opportunities, but were unable to cash in as the score remained tied at 0-0.

·         After a nifty give-and-go between Tryon and Simms saw the Hawks come up empty-handed in the 48th minute, Hartford was on Binghamton's doorstep again in the 60th minute. Tryon headed a long pass from Simms towards the goal, but Moewes came up with the stop on the shot from point-blank range. As time expired, Moewes stopped a desperation shot from senior Anthony LoBello to force overtime.

·         During the second overtime stanza, the Hawks produced back-to-back near misses, the first of which came off the boot of freshman Andri Jonasson. The forward missed the game-winner by inches as he hit the crossbar at the 103:13 mark before junior Romario Jones' shot off the rebound was deflected by Moewes to keep the match scoreless.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         The Hawks dominated every offensive category as they held a commanding 20-4 advantage in shot attempts and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks

·         Nearly half (9) of Hartford's 20 shots were marked on goal as Andre Morrison led the Hawks' attack with two shots on goal

·         Hartford, which combined for three shots in the overtime sessions, prevented Binghamton from getting any shots off during the extra time

·         Meowes came up with a game-high nine saves on Hartford's 20 shot attempts

·         MacKinnon was forced into action just once, as he made the save on a shot from Logan Roberts in the 26th minute

NEWS & NOTES:

·         MacKinnon picked up his third shutout of the season and the 19th of his career, needing just two more to tie Chris Doyle (1998-2001) for the program record.

·         The all-time series between Hartford and Binghamton remains deadlocked with Saturday's scoreless tie at 7-7-3.

·         Hartford improves to 13-1-4 in its last 18 matches at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium.

·         This season, the Hawks have faced overtime seven times, and have lost just once at 2-1-4.

·         Hartford's former captains were honored prior to Saturday's kickoff as part of the University of Hartford's Hawktober Weekend.
