West Hartford, CT - Four University of Hartford women's basketball players received All-Conference honors as announced by the America East Conference at the annual women's basketball banquet held on Thursday. Erica Beverly was named to the All-Conference First Team, Diana Delva and Lisa Etienne earned All-Conference Second Team honors, and Ilicia Mathis was named to the All-Conference Third Team. Beverly and Etienne also picked up All-Defensive Team honors, while freshman Mathis was named to the All-Rookie Team.
Beverly finished the season second in scoring averaging 11.3 points per game while leading the team in rebounding at 7.3 boards per game. The junior forward was named the America East Player of the Week on December 22 after tallying a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in Hartford's 56-52 loss at Bowling Green.
This year, Beverly has posted a team-high 19 double digit point games, nine double digit rebound games, and eight double doubles. She closed out the season shooting 50 percent (117-of-233) from the field, second best on the team as well as in the conference. Additionally, Beverly broke the single season mark for blocks, currently with 58, ranking second in the conference and 43rd in the country. This season, she also broke the career blocks record at Hartford, surpassing Kenitra Johnson's previous mark of 105 on January 24. Beverly currently has 128 blocks on the career.
Delva led the Hawks and the America East in field goal percentage all season, closing out the year with a 62 percent average (142-of-230). Delva's three year average of 60 percent (351-of-581) ranks as the best in program history. She has led the Hawks in scoring on nine occasions this season, and finished out the regular season as the team's leading scorer averaging 11.7 points per game. Additionally, the junior forward ranked second in rebounding and blocks recording 6.4 boards per game and 42 blocks on the season. Delva was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2006-07 and was an All-Conference Second Team selection last season.
Etienne closed out the season leading the Hawks in two statistical categories. The senior point guard tallied 54 steals ranking third in the America East while dishing out 76 assists in her 2008-09 campaign. She also leads the team in three point shooting, boasting a 38 percent average (31-of-82) from behind the arc, ranking fifth in the league. Etienne was named the America East Player of the Week on November 24 following a three-game span where the senior averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.3 assists per game.
Mathis rounded out the Hawks' awards as an All-Conference Third Team selection and All-Rookie Team selection. She was a three-time America East Rookie of the Week, averaging 8.6 points per game on the season including a team-high 12.6 games in conference play. Mathis has tallied 12 double digit point games and has led the Hawks in scoring on eight occasions this season. Additionally, the freshman guard's 81 percent shooting from the free throw line (68-of-84) currently ranks fourth in the conference.
Hartford will begin the quest for its fourth conference championship in five years on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they play #7 Stony Brook in the quarterfinal round. The Hawks have won four conference championships in the history of the program and have been to the postseason in each of the past four years.
