NORMAN, Okla. — A trio of Hartford men's golf team members were tabbed as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced. Recent graduate
Ryan Tomaso, rising senior
Jared Winiarz and rising junior
Manuel Romero took home the distinction for the Hawks.
To be eligible for the All-American Scholar award, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically, must have a stroke average under 76.00, maintain a cumulative career GPA of at least 3.2 and participate in 40 percent of the team's competitive rounds.
"Ryan, Jared and Manuel have continued the tradition of strong academics and golf at Hartford," said head coach
Pete Stankevich. "Receiving prestigious All-America Scholar recognition is a testament to how dedicated and devoted they are to both their golf game and their academics. They each enjoyed a successful 2020-21 year that saw them post career-low scores on the links and impressive GPAs in the classroom."
Tomaso earns Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar distinction from the GCAA for the second time in as many years in 2021. The Milford, Mass., native is coming off an impressive season the links for the Hawks, as he posted the second lowest stroke average on the team after recording a 74.73 over 15 rounds. Leading Hartford at two events, Tomaso's senior campaign was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Hartford Invitational at Wintonbury Hills.
A marketing major who graduated this past May, Tomaso recently took home Big Sky Scholar Athlete of the Year and Big Sky All-Academic Team honors. In 88 rounds and 35 tournaments, he posted a career stroke average of 75.00.
Winiarz receives All-America Scholar honors for the first time in his career. A native of Norton, Mass., he is coming off a solid junior campaign that saw him post a career-best 75.45 stroke average over 11 rounds and six tournaments. Winiarz, a marketing major, took home Big Sky All-Academic Team honors in July.
Romero, a native of Doral, Fla., also takes home All-America Scholar distinction for the first time in his career in 2020. Competing in all eight events for the Hawks this past season, he landed a pair of top-five finishes after tying for fifth at both the Connecticut Cup and the Hartford Invitational at Tumble Brook. A marketing major who was named to the Big Sky All-Academic Team last month, Romero posted a career-best 75.40 stroke average this past season.
During his tenure as head coach, Stankevich has landed 16 GCAA All-America Scholars.
As a team, the Hawks had a successful year both on and off the links, landing six top-five team finishes in nine events, including a pair of first-place showings and one runner-up performance.
In the classroom, a program-record nine student-athletes were named to the Big Sky All-Academic Team. Joining Romero, Tomaso and Winiarz in earning the distinction was graduate student
Elias Gross, recent graduates
Eric Evans and
Matthew Schwab, rising junior
Conor Byrne and rising sophomores
