Cohen Leads Hawks With
All-Conference First Team Honor

The University of Hartford Men's Soccer team picked up a handful of All-Conference honors, the America East announced Friday. The Hawks, who will visit New Hampshire for the America East quarterfinals on Saturday, garnered seven individual honors in total.

Senior midfielder Udi Cohen earned All-Conference First Team recognition, junior defender Andre Morrison was named to the Second Team and freshmen Jimmy Slayton, Gael Kisombe and Alexis Triadis grabbed All-Rookie honors. Cohen and junior defender Mike Barry were also named to the America East All-Academic team.

Cohen, who ranks second on the team in points (nine) and leads the Hawks with five assists, is Hartford's first First Team honoree since Javoni Simms, in 2014. A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, Cohen is also tied for third on the club with two goals, despite being limited to 14 starts due to injury. Cohen, a two-time All-Conference honoree during his career with the Hawks, was a Second-Team pick in 2014.

"It is great to see Udi get recognized amongst the top players in the America East," Hartford Head Coach Tom Poitras said. "He showed his quality even battling through his injuries throughout the season."

This marks Morrison's first All-Conference selection. The junior has been the cornerstone of the Hawks' defense this season, logging 1,770 minutes out of a possible 1,795 this season. From Clarendon, Jamaica, Morrison has started in each of Hartford's 19 matches and leads the team with 17 complete games. He's scored two goals and helped back the Hawks' league-best seven shutouts this season.

"To me, Andre is the best defender in the America East," Poitras said. "His size, strength, speed and ability on the ball combined with his competitive spirit helped lead the way for our seven shutouts. He had a great season."

With seven freshmen among their regular starters, it's little surprise that the Hawks dominated the All-Rookie list. Kisombe (19 starts), Slayton (16 starts) and Triadis (16 starts) each enjoyed outstanding debut seasons at Hartford. Triadis (Frankfurt, Germany) led the Hawks' rookies with two goals and an assist and Kisombe (Uccle, Belgium) was ball-hawking force in the defensive midfield, playing a major role in keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

Slayton, however, may have had the strongest debut campaign. Thrown into the fire just two games into the season after an injury to senior David MacKinnon, Slayton (Wethersfield, Conn.) took control of the goalkeeper position and made it his own. He tied for the America East lead in shutouts (seven), tied for second in saves (62) and ranked fourth in both save percentage (.785) and goals against average (0.99).

"Gael, Jimmy and Alexis led the way for our large freshman class," Poitras said. "We are excited for bigger things to come from these guys and a bright future for our program."

On the academic side, Cohen and Barry helped the Hawks achieve their fifth consecutive season with multiple selections to the conference's All-Academic squad. Barry, a Wethersfield, Conn., resident, has posted a 3.74 GPA while pursing a degree in Health Science, and Cohen (Marketing) has accumulated a GPA of 3.57. It is the first America East All-Academic award for both players.

"Udi and Mike set a great example for what it means to be a student-athlete," Poitras said. "They are hard workers on and off the field and will do great in all their future endeavors."

The Hawks (7-9-3, 2-3-2 America East) are the No. 5 seed in the conference postseason and will visit No. 4 UNH (12-6-0, 4-3-0 AE) on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. The Wildcats won the regular-season matchup, 2-1, at Hartford this past weekend.
