Hartford Names 2005 Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame Class

WEST HARTFORD, CT - One former coach and six former University of Hartford student-athletes, including four who competed at the Division I level, will be inducted as the 15th class into the Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame during ceremonies April 30. Three other individuals, two of whom are former student-athletes, will be honored that evening with special awards.

The dinner will take place in the 1877 Club in the Harry Jack Gray Conference center on campus. A reception will take place at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. For more information on the event, contact Jim Keener, associate athletics director, at (860) 768-5063.

The honorees are: Arthur "Al" Curry '65 (resides in Farmington, CT), wrestling excellence; Robert J. Foley '69 (resides in Danville, CA), men's basketball excellence; Kathy Franklin (resides in Tucson, AZ), volleyball coaching excellence; Michele Juliano Bartling '93 (resides in Daleville, AL, native of Ridgewood, NJ), softball and volleyball excellence; Nancy Kramarz Rohrman '93 (resides in Verona, WI, native of Chesterland, OH), women's soccer excellence; Pat Sheehan '92 (resides in Oviedo, FL, native of Warwick, RI), men's golf excellence; and Earl Snyder '99 (resides in Yardley, PA, native of Plainville, CT), baseball excellence.

Special awards will be given to: the Vincent Brown Coffin Award to David A. Schupp '63 (resides in West Granby, CT); the A. Peter LoMaglio Award to Peter Veru '85 (resides in New York, NY); and the Pioneer Award to Annette Fortune (resides in Broadbrook, CT).

Arthur "Al" Curry '65 - Wrestling Excellence

- A standout performer during the infancy of the wrestling program at Hartford.
- Competing from 1963 to 1965, compiled a 21-3 career record, including eight pins.
- Led the team in wins and points as a junior (9-0 record/33 points) and senior (7-1 record/31 points).
- Placed 2nd in the 115-lb weight class a the MIT Holiday Open Tournament, and was third in the 123-lb weight class at the New England Championships, both in 1964.
- Served as a team captain as a junior and senior.
- Received the Outstanding Varsity Athlete Award in 1965
- Graduated from the Barney School of Business.

Robert J. Foley '69 - Men's Basketball Excellence

- Played on the men's basketball team from 1965 to 1968.
- Scored 816 points (14.6 PPG) and pulled down 592 rebounds (9.0 RPG) in three years.
- Among the team's top three scorers and rebounders each season, and led the team in rebounding as a senior.
- Stands sixth among Hartford all-time leaders in rebounding average.
- Became the first player in the history of the program to reach 500 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
- Posted personal best of 315 points in 1967-68 and 248 rebounds in 1965-66.
- Was a team captain as a senior.
- Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Kathy Franklin - Volleyball Coaching Excellence

- Led the Hartford women's volleyball program as its head coach from 1986 to 1998.
- Compiled 188 wins in 13 seasons, including four consecutive winning seasons between 1990 and 1993. Averaged 24 wins in those four years.
- Owns the top two season records for victories with 27 in 1993 and 25 in 1990.
- Led Hartford to its first national postseason appearance in 1993 with a trip to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.
Earned the North Atlantic Conference and ECAC championships that year.
- Active as a coach and player at all levels of the sport.

Michele Juliano Bartling '93, - Softball & Volleyball Excellence

- Competed as both a third baseman and catcher on the softball team (1990-93), and as a defensive specialist on the women's volleyball team (1991-92).
- Stands as the all-time leader in home runs (18) and doubles (32), and appears among the top five in five other categories. Among them are hits (2nd, 152), RBI (3rd, 77) and total bases (2nd, 248).
- Tallied season records of eight home runs in 1992 and 29 runs scored in 1993. The home run total per game in 1992 led the nation.
- Appears among the top five in seven different season categories.
- Named First Team All-Conference in 1993 and was given a Second Team nod in 1992.
- Has received numerous commendations as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army.
- Graduated from the Barney School of Business.

Nancy Kramarz Rohrman '93 - Women's Soccer Excellence

- A four-time All-Region defender on Hartford's first four women's soccer NCAA Tournament teams.
- Served as a team captain as the Hawks reached the national quarterfinal round in 1991 and national semi-finals in 1992.
- Tabbed the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in 1991.
- Paced the team to a 61-20 record in four years, including a then-record 19 wins in 1992.
- Awarded the University of Hartford Department of Athletics ECAC Medal of Merit as a senior. The award is a high honor given to a senior female student-athlete who combines the best in athletics and academic excellence.
- Stands as the only Hartford women's soccer player to be named to the U.S. Women's National Team.
- Graduated from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.

Pat Sheehan '92 - Men's Golf Excellence

- Excelled as a men's golfer from 1987-91.
- Finished in the top 10 in 16 of the 51 tournaments in which he competed.
- Earned medalist honors at six tournaments: the ECAC Qualifier in the fall of 1989; the West Point Invitational, Yale Invitational and the NEIGA Tournament in the fall of 1990; and the Big Four Tournament and NAC Championship in the spring of 1991.
- Compiled a 76.5 stroke average over 101 rounds of competitive golf.
- Named All-New England in 1990 and All-Conference in 1988, 1989 and 1991.
- Played a key role in leading the Hawks to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 1988 to 1991
- Along with former teammates Jerry Kelly and Tim Petrovic, has made his mark as a successful PGA professional.
- Graduated from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.

Earl Snyder '99 - Baseball Excellence

- Competed on the baseball team from 1995 to 1998.
- The most productive offensive performer in the history of the baseball program.
- Ranks in the top five in most offensive categories, including the top spot in home runs (53), runs batted in (173), total bases (423), hits (222) and runs scored (146).
- Honored as a three-time (1996-98) All-Northeast, All-New England and All-Conference performer.
- Named a team MVP three times and served as a captain as a senior.
- Drafted by the New York Mets in 1998 and has gone onto a successful career in professional baseball.
- Became only the second Hartford player besides Houston Astros great Jeff Bagwell to play at the major league level.
- Broke nearly all of Jeff Bagwell's collegiate records.
- Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Special Awards

The Vincent Brown Coffin Award

Named after the University's first President, the Vincent Brown Coffin Award is presented annually to a former student-athlete who has demonstrated excellence in his/her professional career, and whose accomplishments reflect the foundation the individual established through athletics participation and academic pursuit while at the University of Hartford.

David A. Schupp '63

- A former student-athlete, successful professional, active community leader and caring alumnus.
- Spent the past 35 years as a highly successful analyst of the insurance industry.
- Has founded 10 different companies.
- Currently the chairman of Schupp and Grochmal, a $300 million venture capital fund that invests in the insurance industry.
- An engaged member of the University community, is a member of the Board of Regents, Barney School of Business Board of Visitors, Home Field Advantage Leadership Committee and Campaign of Commitment Steering Committee.
- Competed for the University's cross country team.
- Involved in numerous community initiatives in his hometown of Granby, Conn.
- Graduated from the Barney School of Business.

The A. Peter LoMaglio Award

Named after the "Father" of University of Hartford athletics, the A. Peter LoMaglio Award is presented annually to an individual who has provided outstanding and dedicated service to the department of athletics and its student-athletes.

Peter Veru '85

- Involved with numerous committees and initiatives within the Department of Athletics including the Home Field Advantage Athletics Project Leadership Committee.
- Member of the University's Board of Regents.
- Competed as a men's tennis player at Hartford from 1982 to 1984.
- Served as captain of the tennis team in 1984.
- Long-time supporter of the men's and women's tennis programs.
- Achieved professional success as a musician and in the financial world.
- Graduated from the Barney School of Business.

The Pioneer Award

The Pioneer Award is presented annually to a former student-athlete who played a significant role in establishing a foundation that led to a viability of the program he or she represented.

Annette Fortune (1977-85)

- A coach during the formative years of both the volleyball and softball programs.
- Tallied six winning seasons over an eight-year period (1977-84) as a volleyball coach, including a then-record 25 wins in 1984.
- While at Hartford, also taught physical education classes, supervised the cheerleading team, served on NCAA selections committees for volleyball and softball, and was a general department administrator.
- Worked with the Junior Olympic Softball Association and co-authored the softball instruction book "Complete Softball."
- A member of the pioneering Connecticut Falcons Women's Professional Softball team (1976-80). The Falcons were softball World Series Champions four times.
- Transitioned into an award-winning career in the insurance industry. Also has been successful as a real estate broker.
