Gerone's Gem Lifts Hawks to Opening-Round Victory

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 2, Stony Brook 1
LOCATION: Bearcats Sports Complex (Vestal, N.Y.)
RECORDS: Stony Brook (16-28); Hartford (4-43)

THE LEAD:
Isabella Gerone pitched a stellar game and Bianca Ross had three hits, including a home run, as the Hartford softball team upset third-seeded Stony Brook, 2-1, in the opening round of the America East Tournament on Wednesday..

Gerone allowed seven hits and two walks, giving up only a seventh-inning unearned run to earn her first career victory. Ross went 3-for-3 and launched her fourth homer of the year in the top of the seventh to provide the Hawks with the cushion they needed. Meghan Wynn went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, while Gerone also stole a base and scored a run after pinch running.

Jourdin Herring and Melissa Rahrich each had two hits in a losing effort for the Seawolves. Rahrich allowed seven hits and a walk in going the full seven innings in the circle.

It marked Hartford's first win in the America East Tournament since a 7-2 victory over Boston University on May 11, 2007. It also broke a 13-game losing streak against the Seawolves.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the fifth, as Bianca Ross singled and gave way to Gerone as a pinch runner. Gerone moved to second on a sac bunt, stole third and then came home on Wynn's RBI single to make it 1-0.
• Hartford added to its lead in the top of the seventh when Ross ripped her fourth longball of the year to straightaway center, a solo shot that pushed the lead to 2-0.
• The Seawolves rallied in the top of the seventh and pulled within one on a sac fly off the bat of Allyssa Malony, but Gerone got a flyout to end the game.
