Hartford Drops Season Finale to No. 7 UAlbany

THE BASICS:

RESULT: No. 7 UAlbany 16, Hartford 10
RECORDS: Hartford (6-8, 2-4 AE); UAlbany (12-2, 6-0 AE)
LOCATION: Bob Ford Field at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium (Albany, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team put up a fight against the seventh-ranked team in the nation but came up short of the upset, as UAlbany ended the game with an 8-2 run to defeat the Hawks in their season finale by a 16-10 final. Senior Jaedon Henderson and junior Griffin Feiner each netted a hat trick to pace the offense, while junior Ryan Vanderford compiled 17 saves in the losing effort.

Kyle McClancy led nine UAlbany goal scorers with five goals, while Adam Osika, Mitch Laffin and Justin Reh rounded out the Great Danes' top-scorers with two apiece. The Great Danes, who already secured the top seed of the America East Championship, will take on fourth-seeded Stony Brook in semifinal action on Thursday.

The Hawks conclude the season with a 6-8 overall record and 2-4 mark in the America East. Hartford loses 11 seniors to graduation, including Henderson and Alec Brown, who closed out their careers with 133 and 106 career points, respectively.

THE TURNING POINT:
A pair of strike by Brown and a goal from junior Justin Huggins erased Hartford's two-goal halftime deficit, but UAlbany rallied for seven-straight scores to take a 15-8 advantage with 6:48 to go in the final quarter. Three of McClancy's game-best five goals came during that scoring spurt.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks kept things close for most of the first half, as the Great Danes never took more than a two-goal edge during that stretch. Feiner netted each of his three goals within the game's first 15:21 to tie up the contest at 4-4 in the early moments of the second quarter.
  • UAlbany responded and pulled away from the Hawks by the end of the half using a 4-1 run. McClancey's 17th goal of the season – and second of the game – gave the Great Danes an 8-5 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The Hawks came out of the intermission firing. Brown opened up the scoring in the third by delivering back-to-back strikes at the 13:20 and 12:16 marks before Huggins brought the teams back to even at 8-8 with his lone goal of the game with 8:22 to go in the third.
  • The Great Danes controlled the remainder of the game, though, rallying for seven unanswered goals to take a comfortable lead heading down the stretch.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • UAlbany held commanding edges in shots (58-31) and shots on goal (33-18).
  • The Great Danes also held the edge inside at the faceoff X, going 25-of-28. That performance was fueled by TD Ierlan, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in winning percentage. A rookie, Ierlan went 22-of-24 on the night.
  • Sophomore Claude Bradshaw came away with five ground balls to pace the Hawks. Ierlan collected 13 for the Great Danes, who finished with a 38-27 edge in the category.
