Three Hawks Tabbed All-Academic

AMERICA EAST RELEASE | AMERICA EAST ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—A trio of Hartford tennis student-athletes were selected to the 2013 America East All-Academic squads as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Junior Alex Holdstein represents the Hartford men while junior Katina Zampas and sophomore Christie Greenberg earned selections to the women's team.

Each of the three Hawks is a first-time selection to the America East All-Academic teams.

Holdstein, a junior from Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., is a management major in the Barney School of Business with a 3.77 grade point average. In the spring of 2013, Holdstein completed his second season as a member of the Hartford tennis team after transferring from SUNY Oneonta. Holdstein posted a 3-1 record in singles play during the spring season, including wins in each of his last three starts. Primarily a doubles player, the junior made 13 starts at No. 3 spot, picking up four victories in dual-match play. Among the wins was an 8-3 decision against Sacred Heart to help the Hawks to the doubles point against the Pioneers.

Zampas led the Hawks on the court during her junior year while maintaining a 3.62 GPA as a sociology major in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Laguna Niguel, Calif.-product made 12 starts at the top singles spot for the Hartford women. Zampas led the Hawks with four singles victories over the course of the 2012-13 season, including a come-from-behind, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5 victory over her opponent from Sacred Heart late in the season. The junior also teamed with freshman Colleen Beck to form the Hawks' top doubles tandem in the spring.

Greenberg boasts a 3.66 GPA majoring in economics and finance in the Barney School of Business. The sophomore from Bristol, Conn., made 12 singles starts for the Hawk women during the spring season. Greenberg played No. 4 singles five times while making six appearances at the No. 5 position and one at No. 6. She earned a doubles victory with freshman Colleen Beck at the Quinnipiac Invitational in September. She later teamed with freshman Sarah Bennett at No. 3 doubles for the final five matches of the season.

The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Director meetings, where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference's nine member institutions decided to honor the league's top student-athletes, who excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.

For the fifth straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA's Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time, for example, six student-athletes in the sport of tennis. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
