Hawks Notch 17 Top-10 Finishes to Open Outdoor Schedule

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Hartford track & field teams opened the outdoor portion of their schedule at the UConn Spring Invite Saturday. The Hawks notched 17 top-10 individual finishes and posted one new school record to open the campaign. There was no team scoring in the meet.

Senior Andrew Chalmers again broke one of his own Hartford records, this time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Chalmers finished third in the field with his record-breaking time of 9:44.89, nearly three seconds faster than the previous record. Going back to the indoor season, the Ashland, N.H.-native has broken six school records in his last five meets.

Sophomore Erik Quitzau fell just short of setting a school mark. In the 110-meter hurdles, Quitzau crossed the line with a time of 16.04, .02 seconds off the school-record time. Quitzau finished eighth in the event. He also picked up a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.

In the 200-meter dash, senior Anderson Emerole led the Hawks with his time of 22.39, good for a fourth-place finish overall. Junior Ansumana Diggs and sophomore Jared Casey also finished in the top-20 of the event, notching 14th and 17th place, respectively.

A pair of Hawks also fared well in the 5,000 meters. Senior Kevin Brandon crossed the line in 10th place with his time of 15:28.31. Sophomore teammate John Busque finished right behind Brandon in 11th place with a time of 15:29.39.

The Hartford women posted 12 of the Hawks' 17 top-10s, including a pair in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Tiffany Harrison grabbed fourth place in the event, stopping the clock at 26.10 despite running against the wind. Junior Priscilla Appiagyei took eighth in the race, posting a time of 26.45. Four other Hawks, Merrica Modeste, Nicole McClintock, Kenterra Richardson and Karimah Figueroa, finished in the top-20 of the event.

Three other events, the long jump, 100-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, featured a pair of Hartford women posting top-10 finishes. Senior Nicolle Adams posted a mark of 5.38 meters to pick up a fifth-place finish while sophomore Alexandria Thatcher jumped her way to tenth place with a 4.97-meter mark. Thatcher posted another top-10, taking ninth in the
triple jump.

Junior Stephanie Hanson took eighth place in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 13.19 seconds. Kenterra Richardson stopped the clock in 13.29 seconds, good for tenth place in the sprint. In the 400-meter hurdles, both Hartford student-athletes in the event grabbed top-10s as junior Natalie Bonham took fifth place while sophomore Rebecca Cheatham notched eighth overall.

Sophomore Alisha Beeman was the only Hawk to pick up a pair of top-five finishes. Beeman took fifth place in the javelin with a toss of 32.20 meters. She then went on to a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.58 meters.

Junior Arielle Aikens also earned a top-10 mark, posting a time of 1:04.47 in the 400-meter dash to finish eighth in the event.

The Hawks are in actiona gain next weekend, travelling to Springfield, Mass., April 7 for the AIC Invite.
