WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Striker Amelia Pereira continued her scoring ways on Sunday afternoon as she netted both of the University of Hartford women's soccer team's goals to lead the Hawks to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Albany Great Danes at Alumni Stadium. With their sixth-straight win, Hartford (9-2-3 overall) not only remains unbeaten in league play with a perfect 5-0 mark; it also locked up one of six spots in the upcoming America East Tournament which commences with the first round on Oct. 25.
Hartford will look to remain perfect in league play when it plays its final regular season home contest against reigning America East champion Boston University on Thurs., Oct. 11. Prior to the 7:00 p.m. kick-off, the Hawks will honor their eight seniors with a Senior Night Ceremony.
It didn't take long for the Hawks to jump out to a 1-0 lead as Periera struck in the 18th minute with her team-best 11th marker of the season. After her linemate Arielle Aikens was taken down in the box, rookie Sidney Spremullo flicked the loose ball to Pereira who then one-timed Albany keeper Alana Brennan with a low shot to the right corner of the net.
The score would remain in favor of Hartford at 1-0 heading into the halftime break however 30 minutes into the second stanza, Pereira added to her totals and doubled her team's advantage in the process after heading home the second goal of the match from point blank.
Aikens' unselfish play deep inside of the box allowed the play to unfold which provided the home team with the comfortable 2-0 lead in the 76th minute. On a breakaway, Aikens dribbled deep into the Great Danes' zone towards the right post. Instead of attempting a shot with one defender on her and Albany's keeper in place, Aikens, who saw Pereira streaking down the middle, lofted a lateral pass to her teammate who then used her head to put the finishing touches on the ball. Pereira's header rocketed past Brennan and hit the upper right 90.
Pereira has been a part of nine of the Hawks' 11 total goals during conference play, tallying six scores and three assists during that stretch.
In net for Hartford, senior keeper Erin Quinlan was forced into action on just two occasions. Through six league games, she has conceded just one goal which came against the Retrievers in a 4-1 Hartford victory.
Helping Quinlan preserve the Hawks' eighth shutout of the year were defenders Morgan Berry, Jessica Murphy, Shealagh Begley and Emma Donnelly. The Hawks' back line stifled Albany's offense, which entered the match averaging 2.0 goals per game, as the Great Danes saw just three shot attempts over the 90 minutes.
Brennan made two saves between the posts for Albany, which drops to 5-8-1 overall with an even mark of 2-2 in conference play. The Hawks outshot Albany, 9-3, and also held the advantage in corner kicks by a slight 2-1 margin.
