Men's Tennis Closes Fall Play at Connecticut Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The University of Hartford men's tennis team wrapped up its fall slate at the 2012 Connecticut State Championships at Yale University over the weekend. The Hawks picked up a number of wins in both singles and doubles play with senior Marco Neves leading the way.
 
Neves advanced to the round of 32 in singles play, taking down Sacred Heart's John Lopresti, 7-6, 6-4, in the first round before falling to eventual-champion Jason Brown of Yale in the second round. The senior picked up another singles win in the second-round consolation bracket, defeating UConn's Andrew Ginzberg, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
 
Junior Jordan Badenko also reached the second round, earning a first-round bye before dropping his second-round match.
 
Neves also earned a win in doubles play, pairing with classmate Josh Isaacson to pick up a first-round victory. Neves and Isaacson posted an 8-4 victory over their opponents from Sacred Heart. The pair then picked up a win in consolation doubles, with a 9-7 victory over their Fairfireld foes.
 
In singles consolation play, Isaacson, junior Alex Holdstein and freshman Nicholas Sharwarko each picked up victories. Isaacson defeated Sacred Heart's Luka Bagi, 6-1, 6-1, while Holdstein notched a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Reece Breault of Fairfield.
 
Sharwarko advanced to the semifinals of his consolation bracket with a pair of tiebreak victories. The freshman came from behind to beat UConn's Peter Surovic, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7, before knocking off Matt Dean from Sacred Heart, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7.
 
Sharwarko also won a pair of consolation doubles matches, teaming with Badenko to earn victories over opponents from Sacred Heart, 9-7, and UConn, 9-8.
