WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford volleyball team snapped a four-game skid with their first three-set victory of the season coming over the Providence Friars on Friday night at the Reich Family Pavilion. The Hawks (7-14, 1-4 AE) were led by their lone senior, Kami Nethersole who finished with 12 kills.
Nethersole was the only player in the match to finish with double figure kills. Following her in leading the Hawks was younger sister Sareeta Nethersole and junior Taylor McCreery who each finished with eight. Sophomore Kathryn Gawrych finished with six, while junior Lindsay Anderson chipped in five.
Overall, the Hawks finished the night hitting .252 with 43 kills and just 13 errors in 119 total swings. Defensively, the Hawks held Providence to just .075 hitting with 23 kills and 16 errors in 93 attacks. Leading Hartford's offense was also (Kami) Nethersole who finished with 15 digs for her seventh double double of the season. Libero Dionna Kirton also finished with double figure digs for the Hawks adding 12.
Hartford opened up the match with a kill from sophomore setter Jackie Tamburri off a feed from Kirton. Tamburri finished the night with 30 assists. The Hawks would never trail in the first set, breaking open a 6-1 margin on a kill from (Sareeta) Nethersole, an ace from Gawrych and a pair of errors from the Friars.
The Hawks continues to add to the lead, increasing their lead to seven on an ace from Tamburri and an error on Providence's Colleen McCollom. Rookie Lindsay Compton closed out the set with a pair of aces, the fourth of the game for Hartford.
Hartford again never trailed in the second set, opening up another early lead of 3-1 on an ace from Brooke Tallinger. After slowly building that lead with a rally of two-point runs, the Hawks broke things open with three-straight kills from Anderson (two) and (Kami) Nethersole, which led to an 18-11 advantage. Three straight kills from Gawrych, (Sareeta) Nethersole and McCreery closed out the second set and sent the Hawks into the extended break with a 2-0 lead.
In the final set, Hartford took the opening point on a kills from Gawrych, before the Friars battled for two straight points and opened up their only lead of the night on a kill from Kelly Ashmore and at Hartford error. Hartford responded by stringing together the next three points on three-straight kills form McCreery.
The Friars weren't going to let down easily and used a three-point rally to tie the match at six. McCollom and Anna Russian (two) both had kills in that stretch. Hartford answered that tie with a four-point scurry that opened up a 10-6 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Following a five-point rally that included a pair of aces from Tamburri, the Friars tried to make a run but was cut short at four points. That run pulled the Friars within two, 18-16. The Hawks responded by taking the next three points only to be answered right back with a three-point rally from the Friars that pulled then back within two, 21-19. A kill from (Kami) Nethersole and an error on the Friars closed out the match.
Hartford returns to action on Saturday at the Reich Family Pavilion when they welcome the New Hampshire Wildcats to West Hartford for a 6:00 p.m. match.
