Drexel Homers in 19-2 Loss at Connecticut

Box Score

STORRS, Conn. -
The Hartford baseball team gave up at least a run in six straight innings as they fell at local rival Connecticut on Tuesday, 19-2. The Huskies entered the game ranked No. 25 in the Baseball America Top-25 Poll. Andy Drexel hit a long home run to right field for his seventh dinger of the season, tops on the team. Hartford could get little else going at the plate as Robert Van Woert earned the victory, with Zach Tarner taking the loss.

Connecticut took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, thanks in large part to a three-run home run by George Springer. The Huskies were able to expand that lead over the next two frames thanks to four walks and a hit batsman in the fourth and four Hawk errors in the fifth.

Hartford got on the board in the seventh inning. Junior Matt Walker started the frame off with a line drive single through the left side. Senior Jon Ricco was then hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no one out. Although the next two Hawks flew out, sophomore Andrew Siano pushed across the first Hawk run when his single to right-center plated Waker.

With one out in the eighth, Drexel launched his seventh home run of the season high and deep over the hedges in right field of J.O. Christian Field in Storrs. The blast extended his team lead, and tied him with Corey Taylor of Binghamton for the most in the America East.

Hartford senior Bob Rogers pitched the final four innings of the game for the Hawks, allowing just one earned run and four hits while striking out two.

Senior Mike Amendola extended his team-best hitting streak to eight games with a sharp single up the middle in the sixth inning. He finished 1-for-4 on the day.

The Hawks return to America East play on Saturday when they host the Albany Great Danes. The two teams will play a twin bill on Saturday before meeting for a single game on Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1:30 p.m., with Sunday's game set to begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK. They can also be purchased at the gate.
