Orono, ME - The University of Hartford women’s basketball team travels to the farthest point north in the America East Conference for a Tuesday date with the Maine Black Bears on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Hawks enter the game with a 13-game win streak on the line, while the Black Bears are looking to snap a three-game losing skid. The Black Bears (7-16 overall, 3-8 America East) stand in a two-way tie for seventh place after falling to UMBC 57-45 on the road in their most recent game. Against the Retrievers, Maine was led by Katelyn Vanderhoff who finished with 14 points, the only Black Bears in double figures. The Black Bears struggled from the field throughout, shooting 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the field, including just seven percent from beyond the arc (1-of-14). Samantha Wheeler leads the Black Bears in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.8 points-per-game and 6.9 rebounds-per-game. Kristin Baker is second at 10.7 ppg, while leading the team in assists (84) and steals (40), both among the top-10 in the conference.
The Hawks enter tonight’s game looking for their 14th-straight victory, and to remain unbeaten in conference play, after scoring a 65-35 win over New Hampshire on Saturday. Senior Diana Delva and junior Mary Silvia finished with a game-high 14 points. Delva missed just two of her eight attempts, while grabbing a season-high15 rebounds for her team-high seventh double double. Silvia finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the field. The Hawks shot 43.3 percent for the game (26-of-60), including 53.3 percent (16-of-30) in the second half. The Hawks also finished with a 47-36 advantage on the boards.
Delva currently leads the team in scoring at 14.2 ppg and is first in the nation in field goal percentage, averaging 67.0 percent of her shots (132-of-197). Erica Beverly is second on the team with an average of 8.9 ppg. Delva also leads the team in rebounding (8.2 rebounds-per-game), while Delva and Beverly combine for a defensive threat with 95 of the team’s 110 total blocks.
Hartford and Maine meet for the 56th time in the history of the two programs. The Black Bears hold an 18-37 (.327) advantage in the all time series, however the Hawks have won the last 10 meetings, including two last season and a 76-39 win earlier this season at Chase Arena.
