West Hartford, CT – University of Hartford men's lacrosse coach Peter Lawrence announced his 2010 schedule on Thursday. The Hawks will play 14 total games with seven home dates. Also highlighting the schedule is a rematch against UMBC that will be televised live on ESPNU.
The Hawks open the 2010 season away from West Hartford, CT when they meet the University of Massachusetts Minutemen on Saturday, February 20 at Garber Field at 1:00 p.m. Last season, The Minutemen won a dramatic overtime thriller, 11-10, over Rutgers to win the ECAC Championship and an automatic berth in the 16-team NCAA Championship field.
Hartford will play its first home game on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium on Saturday, February 27 when it welcomes the Delaware Blue Hens to town for a 1:00 p.m. start. Also making trips to West Hartford in the non-conference schedule will be Bellarmine (March 14), Holy Cross (March 17) and Quinnipiac (April 3).
The Hawks' remaining road trips in non-conference play include dates at Siena (March 6), Brown (March 10), Sacred Heart (March 27) and Fairfield who will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday April 13. Highlighting that group is the Siena Saints who finished the 2009 regular season with an eight-game win streak and extended that into the MAAC Championship, defeating Manhattan for the title and the right to represent the conference in the NCAA Championship.
The Hawks open their five-game conference schedule at home against the Albany Great Danes on Wednesday, March 31. A total of three conference teams will play at Alumni Stadium. Also making the trip to Connecticut will be Vermont (March 17) and Binghamton (March 24).
The only two road contests in conference play come against Stony Brook on March 10 and the UMBC Retrievers, who end the 2010 regular season schedule on May 1 in Baltimore. The Retrievers – the reigning America East Champions – will be looking for revenge after Hartford upset the then ranked sixth in the nation team 10-8 in West Hartford.
Last season, the men's lacrosse team finished with a 2-11 overall record. Both wins came at home with a 14-5 win over Presbyterian and the upset over UMBC on Senior Day. Highlighting the Hawks' returning players is sophomore goalie Scott Bement who was named the America East Rookie of the Year and to the America East All-Rookie Team. Hartford also returns Aidan Genik, Ryan Compitello and Carter Bender – three all-rookie team selections. The trio of attackmen produced more than half of the Hawks' offense in 2009.
