Manchester, CT – The University of Hartford men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2009 campaign with the Trinity Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday morning. The women's team finished fifth overall out of nine squads while the men also placed fifth out of nine teams.
Senior Ariana Bass was the first Hawk to cross the finish line for the Hartford women. Bass checked-in with a time of 17:31, placing 14th overall in the 4000-meter course. Hartford rookie Kayla Koonz was the next Hartford runner to finish the course of the Trinity Invitational. Koonz placed 46th overall in her first collegiate race, clocking in with a time of 18:17.
Biliana Mihaylova, Melanie Wilson and Erica Paulson rounded out the top-five finishers for the Hawks, placing 49th, 50th and 51st overall. Mihaylova ran the 4k course in a time of 18:22, while Wilson and Paulson raced to an 18:24 finish in the distance.
Rounding out the top-seven Hartford finishers was Kaycee Martinez and Stefanie Lombardi. Martinez placed 55th overall with her time of 18:36 while Lombardi was the 56th finisher at 18:38. Also competing at the Trinity Invitational for the Hartford women was Brittney Creamer who clocked in at 19:16 (68th place), Cathleen Ficht (19:51; 77th place) and Stephanie Curcio, who placed 79th overall with a time of 19:54.
Junior Jonas Hampton earned the top-finish for the Hartford men. Hampton placed ninth overall, completing the 5k course in a time of 16:35. Sophomore Andrew Chalmers clocked in just nine seconds after Hampton, placing 13th overall at 16:44. In his first cross country meet with the Hawks, Kevin Brandon was the 15th runner to cross the line, averaging a 5:25 pace with an overall time of 16:46.
Josh Hummel, Weston Melnik and Wayne Lawrence earned points for the Hawks, placing 40th, 44th and 48th respectively. Hummel recorded a time of 17:31 in the 5-000-meter course, while Melnik finished at 17:38 and Lawrence clocked-in with a time of 17:39.
Robert Giuliani and Matthew Le rounded out the top seven Hartford finishers with back-to-back finishes. Giuliani crossed the finish line at 17:52, placing 59th overall while Le completed the course just one second later for a 60th place finish. Also competing in the Trinity Invitational for the Hartford men was Eric Flaman (17:56), Corey Smith (18:20) and Brian Famigletti (19:05).
The men's and women's cross country teams will next run at the Hartford Hawks Riverfront Cross Country Festival. The event will be held at Riverside Park in Hartford, CT on Saturday, September 19.
