Keene, NH – The University of Hartford men's and women's cross country teams ran at the 15th Annual Keene State College Invitational on Saturday. The men's team notched a sixth place finish out of 12 teams, while the women's team also saw a sixth place finish in a field of 11.
The Hartford men totaled 180 points overall. Host Keene State won the meet with a total of 44 points.
Junior Jonas Hampton was the first Hawk to the finish line for the men, placing 19th overall on the five mile course with a time of 26:45. Following Hampton on the course was Andrew Chalmers. The sophomore clocked in at 26:50 placing 23rd overall.
Weston Melnik was 56th overall in a time of 27:47, while newcomers Kevin Brandon and Wayne Lawrence were the fourth and fifth Hawks to cross the line. Brandon clocked in at 27:51 finishing in the 61st spot and Lawrence followed at 62nd (27:52).
Junior Josh Hummel crossed at 28:19, finishing 77th overall and earning points as the Hawks' sixth finisher. Robert Giuliani capped the Hartford finishers with his 92nd place run (29:01).
The Hartford women placed sixth overall out of 11 teams, compiling 157 points. On the women's side, Amherst College won the Keene State College Invitational with just 25 points.
Rookie Kayla Koonz was the Hawks' top finisher for the women. Koonz paced the Hartford women, running a season-best 5k time of 20:08. She placed 28th overall.
Following Koonz in the race to the finish line was senior Kaycee Martinez who ranked 32nd overall with a time of 20:17. Classmates Stefanie Lombardi and Ariana Bass were the Hawks' third and fourth finishers. Lombardi, a senior, clocked-in at 20:28 placing 39th overall. Bass raced to a 20:37 finish and was the 42nd runner to cross the line.
Erica Paulson, Melanie Wilson and Biliana Mihaylova rounded out the Hartford women's top-seven. Paulson and Wilson posted back-to-back finishes, taking 53rd and 54th overall with times of 21:04 and 21:05, respectively. Mihaylova ran the 5,000-meter course in 21:07 and placed 58th out of a field of 143 runners.
The men's and women's cross country teams will next compete on Saturday, October 10 at the New England Championships held at Boston's Franklin Park.
