Boston, MA – The University of Hartford men's and women's cross country teams ran at the New England Championships held at Boston's Franklin Park on Saturday morning. The men's team posted a 35th place finish out of 47 squads while the women's team placed 33rd overall out of a field of 49. Four runners saw season-best finishes for the Hawks.
On the women's side, Brown University took home the team title, totaling 130 points overall. Kaycee Martinez was the first Hawk to cross the finish line. The senior placed 163rd out of 327 runners in the 5k course, clocking-in at season- and personal-best time of 20:01.
Stefanie Lombardi and Ariana Bass were the second and third Hawks to finish the 5,000-meter course. Lombardi, a senior, was the 180th runner to cross the finish line, posting a season-best time of 20:17. Bass raced to a 20:30 finish, placed 193rd overall.
Erica Paulson finished in 20:49, placing 212th in her fourth race as a Hawk with her season-best time. Melanie Wilson, Biliana Mihaylova and Kayla Koonz rounded out the top-seven Hartford finishers. Wilson clocked-in at 20:54 (222nd place), Mihaylova raced to a 21:25 finish (249th place) and Koonz ran the 5k in a time of 21:53, finishing 269th overall.
On the men's side, the University of Massachusetts Lowell took first place, compiling just 93 points in the race. Junior Jonas Hampton led the Hartford men with a 121st overall finish, pacing the Hawks in the 8k course with a time of 26:21, a season- and personal-best. Hampton has been the Hawks' top-finisher in three out of four races this season.
Andrew Chalmers, Weston Melnik and Josh Hummel were the next three Hartford men to cross the finish line. Chalmers recorded a time of 26:51 and saw a 178th place finish. Melnik was the 215th runner, posting a season-best time of 27:15 while Hummel saw a time of 27:33 in the 8,000-meter course.
Rounding out the Hawks' top-seven was Wayne Lawrence, Kevin Brandon and Matthew Le. Lawrence took 245th place overall with his time of 27:37. Brandon and Le placed 265th and 269th overall respectively, crossing at 28:17 and 28:28.
The men's and women's cross country squads will take a week off before running in the CCSU Mini Meet, the final tune-up before the America East Championships. The CCSU Mini Meet will be held on Saturday, October 24 at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT.
