Former University of Hartford lacrosse player Matt Holman was one of 12 players selected by the Boston Blazers last month in the National Lacrosse League's Expansion Draft.
Boston, which will join the league for the 2009 season, selected one player from each of the 12 returning team's unprotected lists. Holman was the Blazers' pick from the Portland LumberJax, the team that drafted him out of college in 2006. Holman had played two seasons with the LumberJax and scored 19 goals in 19 career games.
Holman was a two-year team co-captain (2005 and 2006) for the Hawks and a four-year letterwinner who played in 60 games while making 20 starts. He finished his career with 64 goals and added 21 assists for 85 points. He also recorded 17 multi-goal games, including nine hat tricks. He was named to the America East All-Academic Team in 2006 and was a four-time selection to the America East Academic Honor Roll (Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2003 and 2004). In his final season he ranked second on the team in scoring with 20 goals and 11 assists for 31 points. His best season came as a junior when he led the Hawks with 27 goals and six assists for 33 points.
The Blazers will begin playing home games at TD Banknorth Garden in January, sharing the arena with the NHL's Boston Bruins and NBA's Boston Celtics.
