Special Recognition Awards


The 1996 inductees listed below, are the fourth class to be inducted and will join 29 student-athletes, coaches and administrators previously elected into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. The selections for the Hall of Fame are made by a committee representing alumni, faculty, administration, past and present athletics staff and former student-athletes.

 

William W. Brown '76 - Men's Basketball Excellence

? Played center for the Hawks from 1972-76.

? Scored 1,023 points and pulled down 651 rebounds, becoming one of a handful of players to exceed 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career.

? Led team in rebounding as a senior (10.4 RPG) and was second in scoring (13.9 PPG).

? Averaged 14.4 PPG as a junior and 14.0 PPG as a sophomore.

? Was a team co-captain as a senior.

? Played on three NCAA tournament teams from 1972-75.

? Since graduation, has been a valued educator in the Hartford public school stystem.

 

Frank R. Deutsch '60 - Men's Basketball and Baseball Excellence

? Was a guard on the basketball team and a pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team from 1955-59.

? Served as co-captain of Hartford's first men's basketball team.

? In basketball, scored a combined 473 points as a junior (14.9 PPG) and senior (12.8 PPG).  Led the team in scoring each year.  Paced the Hawks in free throws shooting in 1957-58 (.752) an din steals as a junior and senior.

? In baseball, was co-captain as a senior.  Was the University of Hartford's first baseball MVP in 1958.

? Is a respected lecturer and publisher on the subject of mathematics and longtime professor of mathematics at the Pennsylvania State University.

 

Timothy A. Niles '87 - Men's Tennis Excellence

? Played tennis at Hartford from 1984-87, compiling a 41-11 record in singles competition and a 39-6 mark in doubles play.

? Posted two 20-win seasons with a 20-5 record as a senior and a 21-1 record as a sophomore.

? Helped Hartford to two undefeated seasons, 10-0 in 1986 and 13-0 in 1985.

? Won the New England number two singles title as a sophomore and was a number one singles finalist in 1986.

? Was scholar-athlete award recipient, graduating cum laude.

? Was an active student leader while at Hartford.

 

Bethanne O'Kelly '90 - Women's Golf Excellence

? Played women's golf at Hartford from 1986-90 and is one of the University's top female athletes.

? Compiled a career stroke average of 79.2 over 49 rounds of golf.

? Won medalist honors 14 times.  Included were the individual titles at the ECAC Championship in the fall of 1986 and 1989, and the New England championship in the spring of 1989.

? Led Hartford to the New England team title in the spring of 1989.

? Appeared in the Nov. 3, 1986, issue of Sports Illustrated among "Faces in the Crowd" following her success at the ECAC tournament as a freshman.

 

Audrey L. Russell Peterson '89 - Women's Soccer Excellence

? Played both defense and offense throughout her career, making the transition from a defender as a freshman to forward as a senior.

? Left as the only three-year captain in the program's history.

? Started all 74 games Hartford played from 1985-88.

? Led the team in scoring as a senior (7-4-18).

? Earned Second Team All-Northeast region Honors and won the athletic department's ECAC Medal of Merit award as a senior.

? Played a pivotal role in guiding the Hawks to ECAC postseason appearances in 1985 and 1987.

? Helped Hartford to 42 wins during her stay.

 

Michael V. Ziogas '82 - Men's Soccer Excellence

? Starred as goalkeeper for the Hawks from 1978-81.

? Left as the program's career leader in goals against average (0.82, saves(552) and shutouts (32).

? Was named an All-American as a senior.  Also, was a two-time All-New England and All-Northeast 8 honoree.

? Left program holding down three of the top five season goals against averages.

? Played on three teams that reached the NCAA Division 2 tournament (1978, 1980, 1981) and one team that won the ECAC championship (1979).

? Shared the team's leadership award and was a co-captain as a senior.
