Kingston, RI - Three University of Hartford women's track and field student-athletes competed in the 13th Annual University of Rhode Island Pentathlon on Friday in Kingston, RI. The URI Pentathlon is the only opportunity for Hawks runners to gain a qualifying score for the America East Championships.
A pentathlon consists of five different events with 30 minutes rest between events. They student-athletes begin with the 55-meter high hurdles, move onto the high jump, then the shot put, followed by the long jump with an 800-meter run wrapping up the events. The student-athletes earn points for their results in each of the events with the most points winning the event. This is the first time that the Hawks have taken any student-athletes to a multi-event meet.
Sherilyn Nicholas led the Hawks in the pentathlon, finishing in eighth place with 2,639 points, while Latasha Jarrett finished just behind her with 2,584 points for ninth place. Diana Christopoulos finished the pentathlon in 15th place overall with a final point total of 1,829. Kaycee Martinez was also competing for the Hawks but was forced to withdraw from the event with an injury.
Nicholas and Jarrett both had their best events in the high jump with each scoring 712 total points. That point total equaled out to a jump of 5' 2.25”, which tied them for third highest jump. Christopoulos best event came in the shot put where she scored 530 points on a throw of 32' 10.25”, the best throw of the day. Nicholas also faired well in the 800m run with her time of 2:32.9 good for second place overall.
