PISCATAWAY, NJ ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team's season ended on Friday with a 2-0 loss to Rutgers University in the first round of the NCAA Women's College Cup at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights (16-3-3 overall) scored goals in each half to advance to the second round where they will meet Boston College on Sunday. The Hawks finish the 2006 season with an overall record of 10-9-2, the first winning season under head coach John Natale.
Hartford, making its 13th NCAA appearance, had trouble generating chances on offense. Rutgers broke through in the 22nd minute when Jenifer Anzivino netted her sixth goal of the season off an assist by Gina DeMaio. The Scarlet Knights took the 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Hawks fought hard in the second stanza to net the equalizer, but the Scarlet Knights added an insurance goal in the 81st minute to seal the victory. Caycie Gusman scored with just under 10 minutes remaining off a feed from DeMaio.
Junior goalkeeper Liz Cook finished the game with seven saves. Rutgers keeper Erin Guthrie recorded her 13th shutout of the season.
"The way we ended this season, it was just a great experience for us," said Natale. "Everything we went through this year we can grow from, and next year we have a lot to look forward to."
