CAMBRIDGE, MA ? The America East Conference office announced on Thursday that 1,730 of its winter and spring student-athletes?over 60 percent of the athletes eligible to compete?have been named to the 2008-09 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. Included on the list were 139 student-athletes from the University of Hartford.
Student-athletes had to earn grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher to receive this recognition. Of those student-athletes, 836 earned Commissioner's Honor Roll status for completing the spring semester with grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher and competing during the winter or spring sports season. The Hawks had 73 student-athletes earn the distinction.
The men's outdoor track and field team led the way for the Hawks, placing 19 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll, including nine on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams also placed nine members on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Hartford has 12 programs which compete during the winter and spring seasons. The following is a complete list of each sport and the number of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll/Commissioner's Honor Roll: men's outdoor track and field (19/9), men's indoor track and field (17/8), women's indoor track and field (16/9), lacrosse (15/6), softball (15/5), women's outdoor track and field (14/9), women's basketball (11/8), baseball (10/3), men's basketball (8/4), women's golf (6/6), men's tennis (4/3) and women's tennis (4/3).
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference's 21 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes themselves as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The America East Academic Cup, which honors the America East institution with the highest average cumulative GPA among its student-athletes, will be awarded Wednesday, June 24, while the winter/spring scholar-athletes will be named on Tuesday, June 30.
