Track and Field Competes at New England Championship; Martinez Wins 400-m Hurdles

The University of Hartford track and field teams competed at the two-day New England Championships held at the University of Massachusetts, which wrapped up on Saturday. The women notched 21 points for a 16th place finish out of 36 teams while the men's team ranked 21st out of 41 squads with 13.50 points. Eight track and field athletes were named All-New England for notching top-eight finishes in seven total events. 
 

The top performance of the weekend came from Kaycee Martinez in the 400-meter hurdles, a race that she has dominated all season. The junior, who bettered her school record while running an NCAA qualifying time of 1:00.57 in the preliminaries on Friday, finished first in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.49.

 

On the track, Ariana Bass posted a seventh place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 1:04.33. Distance runner Elizabeth Foster boasted an All-New England performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, placing third in the race with a time of 10:46.76. Anderson Emerole also excelled on the track. The rookie sprinter took sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.16) and placed seventh in the 400-meter run (49.30), earning All-New England honors in both events.

 

In the field events, Ryan Trupin and Nigel Nimoh highlighted the squad with All-New England performances in the jumps. Trupin, a senior, shattered his school record in the high jump by two centimeters with his height of 1.95-meters, tying for fourth place in the event. Nimoh continued his successful rookie campaign with a fifth place finish in the triple jump (13.86-meters).

 

In the relays, the women's 4x400-meter team placed sixth, earning All-New England honors with a time of 3:54.49. The women's 4x100-meter squad finished 10th with a school record-breaking time of 48.60. The previous record time of 49.35 was set in the 2005 season. The men's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams also competed on Saturday, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively.

 

Foster and Martinez will head to the NCAA East Region Championships held in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. During the two-day event, Martinez will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, while Foster, who scored two top finishes at the 2009 America East Championships, will run in the 5,000-meter event and the 3k steeplechase.
