NORTH FALMOUTH, MA ? The University of Hartford men's golf team finished as runner-up at the 2008 America Sky Championship and 16th at the Hawks Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Ballymeade Country Club.
Sophomore Brian Albertazzi captured individual medalist honors for the America Sky Championship and was one of seven golfers to earn all-conference recognition. He also tied for third overall for the Hawks Invitational, as the two events were run concurrently.
Baylor entered the final round of the Hawks Invitational with an eight stroke lead and shot the low team round of the day (282) en route to the overall title. Baylor was the only school to finish under par for the tournament at 566 (-10) and beat runner-up NC State (576) by 10 shots.
NC State's Matt Hill continued to light up the golf course. After posting a 66 in the opening round, he shot 65 over the final 18 holes to take home individual medalist honors at 131 (-13). He was the only competitor in the field to break 70 in both rounds and won by nine shots.
As for the America Sky Championship, Sacramento State won the team title with a two-day total of 589. Sacramento State's Scott DeBorba was the individual runner-up after posting consecutive rounds of 71. DeBorba and teammate Grant Norton were named to the all-conference team and were joined by Utah Valley's Nick Nelson, Binghamton's Andrew Marler and Texas-Pan American's Armen Kirakossian and Tim Acaster.
Albertazzi shot 69 in the final round to hold off DeBorba by a shot. He carded five birdies and two bogeys in his round to become the first Hartford golfer to earn medalist honors at the America Sky Championship in the conference's short history.
Juniors Nick MacDonald and Maki Kobayashi each improved their scores in the final round, posting identical rounds of 77. MacDonald tied for 68th overall at 155 while Kobayashi tied for 85th at 157. Senior Kyle Parsons tied for 93rd at 160 while freshman Matt Smith posted back-to-back rounds of 82 to tie for 106th at 164. Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks as individuals were junior Nick Pokora (157, T-85th), junior Zack Ungvarsky (163, T-104th) and freshman Jesse DiBiasio (170, T-116th).
Hartford will return to action at the Brickyard Collegiate on October 11-13 at the Brickyard at Riverside in Macon, GA.
