NORTH FALMOUTH, MA ? The University of Hartford men's golf team is in 11th place after the first round of play at the Hawks Invitational on Monday afternoon at Ballymeade Country Club.
Baylor leads the field of 23 teams after posting a team score of 284 in the opening round. TCU and the Rhode Island are tied for second place at 292 while NC State (293), Sacramento State (296) and Mercer (296) round out the top five. Hartford finished the day with a team total of 303.
NC State's Matt Hill has the overnight lead after carding a stellar round of 66 (-6). Mercer's Bill Jones (69) was the only other player in the field to break 70, though 11 golfers shot par or better. Among them was Hartford sophomore Brian Albertazzi, who shot an even-par 72 to lead his team and is tied for ninth overall.
The tournament is also serving as the America Sky Championship for the seven schools from the conference. Sacramento State leads Hartford by seven shots while Weber State (310), Texas Pan American (311), Binghamton (311), Northern Colorado (316) and Utah Valley (319) round out the field.
Sacramento State's Scott DeBora shot 71 and has a one-shot lead on Albertazzi in the race for America Sky Championship individual medalist honors. Senior Kyle Parsons is also in the hunt after posting a one-over round of 73.
Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks were juniors Nick MacDonald (78, T-61st) and Maki Kobayashi (80, T-85th) and freshman Matt Smith (82, T-98th). The Hawks also had three golfers compete as individuals: freshman Jesse DiBiasio (82, T-98th) and juniors Nick Pokora (83, T-104th) and Zack Ungvarsky (87, T-113th).
With Sunday's round being canceled due to rain, the tournament has been shortened to 36 holes. The Hawks Invitational and America Sky Championship will conclude on Tuesday with a final round of 18 holes at Ballymeade Country Club. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m.
