HARTFORD RESULTS
Loudonville, NY - The University of Hartford women's tennis team completed its first tournament of the season, the Siena Invitational this weekend. The Hawks finished with individual victories in first, second and fourth singles, while also posting a doubles win.
Freshman Maggie Sabatino saw the most individual success for the women, giving Hartford its only shot at an individual title at second singles. Sabatino defeated Providence College's Melanie Albert in her opening match 7-6, 6-0, advancing to the semifinals. She eventually lost her semifinal match to Siena's Danielle Crill, 6-1, 6-4.
Other singles wins on the weekend came in the second day of action from Kara Pease, Nikki Haynal and Gulay Ozdemir, all in backdraw play. Pease's victory came in her second backdraw match, where she defeated Holy Cross' Emma Rudnik by an 8-6 score. Haynal defeated Siena's Lauren Moy in her first back draw. Moy won the first set by a 3-6 margin before Haynal came back to force a third set, winning the second by a 6-3 score. She won the match with a 10-7 win in the third set. Ozdemir's victory came in fourth singles where she defeated teammate Margaret Potkay by an 8-6 margin in both player's second backdraw.
In doubles play, Katie Greenberg and Jessica Ruggles picked up an early win in number two doubles to remain in the winners bracket. They defeated Siena's Katie Sue Scullin and Alexis Sigeti in their first match by an 8-5 margin. The eventually fell to Providence's Albert and Amy McDevitt by an 8-3 score.
Sabatino and Kasey Michels also saw a doubles win in their first singles backdraw match against Holy Cross' Kristen Meahl and Emma Rudnik. They won by an 8-1 margin.
The women's tennis team will next play on October 2 when they host Hofstra at the Hartford Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m.
