Martinez Leads Hawks Track and Field at UMass Invitational

      

 

Amherst, MA - The University of Hartford men's and women's track and field teams competed at the University of Massachusetts Spring Meet this past weekend. The women's team finished with 59 points and fifth place out of nine teams, while the men finished in seventh out of nine teams.

 

The women's team was led by four school records and two first place finishes. The first came in the 4-x400-meter relay. The relay team of Kaycee Martinez, Ariana Bass, Marissa Poleto and Latasha Jarrett posted a time of 3:58.21 which was .3 second faster than the second place finisher. The relay also set a school record for the second-straight week.

 

Martinez also shattered two records in her individual events. She began with breaking the 100-meter hurdles record with a second place finish in a time of 15.18, a half second faster than her old record. She then topped her 400-meter hurdles time by almost three seconds, breaking her own school record and finishing first and also breaking the UMass facility record.

 

The final school record for the women came in the shot put where Shay Brown finished third overall with her throw of 36'8.25”. Also finishing well in the shot put was Jarrett who threw a distance of 29'6” for seventh place. Carolyn Grime saw a pair of top-eight finishes in the hammer throw and discus. Both were seventh place finishes with a throws of 91'5” in the hammer and 93'8” in the discus.

 

On the men's side the Hawks were led by a school record finish in the 400-meter run for Warren Lane. Lane finished with a time of 50.84 and was also the anchor on the 4x400-meter relay team which set a school record with a time of 3:27.03. He was joined in the relay by Fawaz Al-Sudairi, Brandon Coleman and Eric Ciccone. The relay finished sixth overall.

 

The men's team also set a record in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 43.73, finishing second overall. The relay consisted of Christopher Carr, Anthony Flammia, Stephan Jospitre and Anthony Oluwanifise. The later three in the relay also finished third-fourth-fifth in the long jump. Oluwanifise led the way in the jump with his distance of 21'. He was followed by Jospitre in fourth place with a distance of 20' 7.25”, while Flammia finished with a distance of 20'0.5”.

 

Both teams will next run a six-team meet hosted by Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. The Hawks will join CCSU, Colgate, Maine and Vermont for the Saturday, April 19, meet.
