WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford men's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over UMBC on Wednesday night at Al-Marzook Field.
The Hawks (7-4-5 overall, 2-1-4 America East) got goals from senior Oswald Adu and junior Andreas Blamo to remain in the hunt for one of six spots in the upcoming America East Championship. The win vaulted Hartford into a three-way tie for fourth place with Stony Brook and UMBC (8-6-3 overall, 3-3-1 America East).
Hartford took an early lead when Adu scored in the eighth minute of the contest. A UMBC foul outside the box set up a free kick opportunity for senior Gary Muir, who blasted a shot on goal over a wall of defenders. Goalkeeper Steve King made the stop but couldn't corral the rebound, and Adu cleaned up the loose ball for his third goal of the season.
UMBC tied the game in the 24th minute on a shot by leading scorer Kevin Gnatiko. A ball was played from the left side through the box and came out to Gnatiko in front of the goal. He calmly buried the shot from six yards out past Hartford keeper Matt Glaeser.
The Hawks netted the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute on a play that started from their own half. Senior Daniel Antunez drilled a pass from the midfield that found Blamo up the right side. Blamo cooly settled the ball and then placed his shot just under the crossbar for the go-ahead tally. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Glaeser finished with two saves while King made one. The Hawks outshot the Retrievers 9-7 in the contest.
Hartford will close out the regular season the University at Albany on Sunday, November 4 at 2 p.m.
