W Soccer Beats Vermont, Earns Third Seed in AE Championship

WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

The victory cemented the third seed and a first-round home game in the upcoming America East Championship. The Hawks (7-6-1 overall, 5-1-2 AE) will host sixth-seeded Binghamton University on Thursday, November 1 at 6 p.m. The winner moves on to the semifinals and a date at second-seeded Boston University on Sunday, November 4 at noon.

Hartford scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute after a Vermont foul yielded a free kick from just outside the box from the right side. Senior Sara Flowers played the ball into the box that found her sister Becky, who headed it inside the right post for her first tally of the season.

The Hawks added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to take the pressure off in the final 10 minutes. Sophomore Laura Guigli and Sara Flowers connected with senior Meagan Riemer for an easy score from eight yards out on the right side. The goal was the third of the season for Riemer.

Senior Elizabeth Cook recorded her career-best eighth clean sheet of the season. She stopped all nine shots the Catamounts put on goal. Vermont (3-14-1 overall, 2-6-0 AE) goalkeeper Eliza Bradley made seven saves in the defeat.

Cook, Flowers, Riemer, Maja Siosteen and Stephanie D'Aurio were all honored prior to kickoff in a special senior day ceremony. Cook and Siosteen, the only four-year letterwinners of the group, will be making their third appearance in the America East Championship.
